What is ABS and Traction Control? How Does It Work?

Antilock brake system or also called ABS provides significant safety. ABS minimizes wheel lockup and skidding when braking on wet or slippery surfaces or when stooping suddenly on dry surface. The ABS allows the driver to maintain steering control when braking and steer its way around objects and out of trouble. The ABS system helps to keep the vehicle straight and stable during a sudden panic stop and reduces the chance of the car getting sideways. ABS brake system is a standard or optional in most new Honda Acura vehicles. ABS has also a traction control capabilities that allow the system to monitor and prevent wheel spin when accelerating on a wet or icy surfaces. Traction control is very helpful on a performance Honda Acura car because wide tires have poor wet weather traction. When the wheel speed sensor detects wheel spin the brakes are applied to the wheel with the least traction so engine power will go to the wheel with the most traction. If both wheels are spinning they are both braked to maintain traction. Traction control systems use different methods to reduce engine power when the wheel starts to spin. Some reduce engine power by retarding the ignition timing, disabling one or more fuel injectors or simply reducing the throttle body opening.
